Antietam National Battlefield

Antietam National Battlefield:

The battle of Antietam was fought on September 17, 1862.  It stopped the Confederacy's first attempt to carry the war into the North and was the bloodiest single day in American history, with 23,000 casualties.  Although the battle was a tactical draw, it was a strategic Union victory, in that the Confederates withdrew back into Virginia.  In addition, it allowed President Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, which gave the war a two-fold purpose, to preserve the Union and now free the slaves.
