Friday, June 27, 2008 – The National Watch & Clock Museum –Visit a Smithsonian-quality museum, home of over 12,000 clocks and watches from all over the world including German musical clocks and the monumental Engle clock with 48 moving figures. Other clocks range from sundials to today’s atomic clock, plus two special exhibits at all times. See ancient water and sand clocks, military and automobile clocks, and three centuries of outstanding pocket watches. Then on to Wheatland, a National Historic Landmark, home of our 15th President, James Buchanan. Step onto the grounds of Wheatland and experience the private world of a president who struggled to calm a divided nation on the brink of civil war. It’s a fine example of Federal architecture built in 1828 and served as Buchanan’s presidential campaign headquarters. Most of his furniture is displayed as it was in his lifetime. This easy walking tour is led by costumed guides who tell facts, stories and anecdotes about many points of architectural and historical interest. Included is the Lancaster Quilt and Textile Museum, highlighting a world famous collection of more than 80 genuine Amish quilts, some more than 100 years old. Also featured are visits to the Lancaster Cultural History Museum, and Central Market, the oldest, freshest, most colorful farmers’ market in the U.S., where you will see, and want to buy, Amish crafts and all sorts of delectable foods. Sit in an engineer’s seat, explore a caboose, experience a turn-of-the-century passenger station and enjoy Pennsylvania’s premier museum of railroading exhibiting a world-class collection of more than 100 historically significant locomotives and railcars, from mammoth steam engines to quaint Victorian coaches. Then cross the village road to the Strasburg Railroad, for a 45-minute excursion through Amish farm country from Strasburg to Paradise on a rolling antique, chartered in 1832 to carry milk, mail, and coal. While you’re relaxing, a trainman shovels half a ton of coal into the engine’s firebox to propel the 185-ton iron horse down the steel rails. Saturday, June 28, 2008 - The Amish of Lancaster County –See the Amish countryside on this custom-designed tour led by a Mennonite guide. The tour includes a visit to an Amish-owned business and begins with the 30 minute acclaimed dramatic three-screen feature presentation, Who Are the Amish? It seeks to answer questions including the differences between Amish and Mennonites and has been called “the most sensitive presentation of Amish life” by National Geographic Traveler.
