Then on to Wheatland, a National Historic Landmark, home of our 15th President, James Buchanan. Step onto the grounds of Wheatland and experience the private world of a president who struggled to calm a divided nation on the brink of civil war. It’s a fine example of Federal architecture built in 1828 and served as Buchanan’s presidential campaign headquarters. Most of his furniture is displayed as it was in his lifetime. Sit in an engineer’s seat, explore a caboose, experience a turn-of-the-century passenger station and enjoy Pennsylvania’s premier museum of railroading exhibiting a world-class collection of more than 100 historically significant locomotives and railcars, from mammoth steam engines to quaint Victorian coaches. Then cross the village road to the Strasburg Railroad, for a 45-minute excursion through Amish farm country from Strasburg to Paradise on a rolling antique, chartered in 1832 to carry milk, mail, and coal. While you’re relaxing, a trainman shovels half a ton of coal into the engine’s firebox to propel the 185-ton iron horse down the steel rails. The tour includes a visit to an Amish-owned business and begins with the 30 minute acclaimed dramatic three-screen feature presentation, Who Are the Amish?  It seeks to answer questions including the differences between Amish and Mennonites and has been called “the most sensitive presentation of Amish life” by National Geographic Traveler. The New York Times praised it for its “lush” photographs and “intelligent” narration.
